Excel deletes entire cell instead of only contents due to wrong command.
Cause:
The 'Delete' instead of the 'Clear' command in the 'Edit' menu was used.
Solution:
Select the 'Clear' command and clear only the contents.
1) Select the cell with the contents to be deleted.
2) Select the 'Edit' menu and select 'Clear'. (A submenu opens.)
3) Select 'Contents' from the submenu.
